Abstract A theoretical analysis of the separation of a mixture of macromolecules by a chromatographic column packed with porous adsorbents is given. Fractionation may take place by either exclusion of large molecules from the pores in the column packing or by selective adsorption. A model for packing structure is developed which is used as the basis of a theory of chromatographic separation.
