Experimental methods for estimating the thermodynamic derivative, (∂ T /∂ P ) s , of both liquids and solids are described and discussed. The adiabatic heating parameter is shown to be useful, in conjunction with other more commonly measured properties, for estimating the heat capacity, C p = T (∂ S /∂ T ) p , and the internal pressure, P i = (∂U/∂V) T . The principles for applying adiabatic heating measurements to the characterization of polymers are given with data for several common liquids and for filled and unfilled polyurethane rubbers.
