The dynamic modulus and loss angle of butyl vulcanizates containing both normal and attrited carbon black (HAF) have been studied over a wide strain amplitude range. Large changes are observed in the modulus with the attrition of the black. Hot milling treatment accentuates these changes. The decrease of modulus with the logarithm of the strainwork is shown to be sigmoidal in form. When the modulus is normalized between, G 0 , the shear modulus at very low strains and, G ∞ , the shear modulus at high strains, the resulting plots with respect to strainwork are independent of the concentration of the black and the condition of the vulcanizate.
