The bending mechanism of an electrodriven ionic polymer hydrogel membrane was investigated in terms of the concentration of ionic groups and the valence of ionic species within the hydrogel membrane. It was elucidated that the distribution of the ionic concentration played an important role in the bending behavior of the membrane. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 82: 76–80, 2001
