Abstract Experiments for hydrogen generation by water electrolysis using solar batteries and a solid polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) cell were performed. Poly‐crystalline silicon solar batteries and a PEM electrolytic cell of a single sheet were used in this experiment. The output of solar batteries is connected to the electrolytic cell through a DC‐DC converter. The conversion efficiencies of solar energy to hydrogen energy are evaluated. On the basis of experimental results, simple simulations of solar hydrogen generation were performed taking the matching between solar batteries and PEM cells.
