The Dynamic Matrix Control (DMC) is widely used in chemical and petrochemical industries for improving plant efficiency and reducing off‐spec products. While traditional DMC is a technique based on a linear model, the nonlinear extension of DMC is also being investigated by researchers since the early nineties. In this work, the Nonlinear Dynamic Matrix Control (NDMC) is improved to accomplish an on‐line model parameter adaptive process to make it an Adaptive Nonlinear DMC (ANDMC). The performance of the ANDMC is compared with a constant parameter NDMC for disturbance rejection. The entire simulation has been carried out using the commercial dynamic simulator Aspen ™ Engineering Suite (2004.1). Copyright © 2008 Curtin University of Technology and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
