Abstract A new interaction analysis for decentralized control is presented in this paper. The proposed method uses ( Q , S , R )‐dissipativity and passivity to identify the effect of loop interactions on the dynamic control performance achievable by multiloop controllers (in terms of open‐loop bandwidth of the plant and multiloop controller). The frequency‐dependent upper bounds of the controller gain are also formulated to provide more insights into the impacts of interactions on decentralized control. A case study on the interaction analysis of distillation column is used to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
