A novel phenyl–bromine ligand exchange reaction by BBr 3 on germanium was investigated that proceeds without breaking GeCH 2 Ar bond. Typically, the reaction between (PhCH 2 ) 3 PhGe and BBr 3 resulted exclusively in the formation of (PhCH 2 ) 3 GeBr. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
