The addition of certain activated nucleophiles to activated imines is catalyzed by lanthanum isopropoxide. As activated nucleophiles, methylmalononitrile and methyl 2‐cyanopropanoate can be utilized. Imines having an electronwithdrawing group either at the carbon or at the nitrogen atom of the C=N double bond can be used; for example N ‐toluenesulfonylimines, N ‐(4‐methoxycarbonylphenyl)imines and α‐imino esters.
