The La–Li–( R )‐BINOL complex prepared from either lanthanum(III) chloride [LaCl 3 · 7H 2 O] or [La(O‐i‐Pr) 3 ] has made possible effective catalytic asymmetric syntheses of therapeutically important ß‐blockers such as propranolol and metoprolol. The possible stereochemical course of asymmetric nitroaldol reactions has been also clarified.
