In addition to the known water‐soluble tributyltin compounds, N ‐tributyltin mesylimide [Bu 3 SnN‐(SO 2 Me 2 ) 2 ] was prepared and proposed as a fungicide for water‐based preservative formulations. The aqueous solubility of the new compound is in the range of 11.0–11.4% w/w at 25 °C and its activity towards moulds ( Aspergillus niger ) is near that for tributyltin oxide. The compound has an average toxicity (LD 50 =740 mg kg −1 ).
