A variety of tributyltin oxygen compounds,(nC 4 H 9 ) 3 SnOX where X = Sn(nC 4 H 9 ) 3 , C 2 H 5 , nC 4 H 9 , C 8 H 17 , CH 2 C 6 H 5 , COCH 3 , have been studied in refluxing CCI 4 . A reaction was observed to occur where X = C 2 H 5 , C 4 H 9 , C 8 H 17 , CH 2 C 6 H 5 , leading to the formation of (nC 4 H 9 ) 3 SnCl, CHCl 3 and an aldehyde. Possible reaction pathways are suggested. These reactions have implications for the use of CCl 4 as an extraction/reaction solvent.
