Catalytic amounts of the mixed reagents n ‐BuLi and LiK(OCH 2 CH 2 NMe 2 ) 2 in combination with Mg(OCH 2 CH 2 OEt) 2 promote the multiple and clean addition of ethylene to a series of alkyl aromatics to produce sterically demanding aromatic hydrocarbons and their functional derivatives.
