Voltage‐gated calcium channels (VGCCs) are important therapeutic targets for cardiovascular and neuropsychiatric disorders. In their Communication on page 7019 ff., Y. Zhou, Y. Wang et al. report the engineering of a novel class of genetically encoded photoswitchable inhibitors of VGCCs to control Ca 2+ signals and biological activity in excitable cells. Such an optogenetic device could potentially be adapted to suppress cardiac arrhythmia through the application of light.
