Molecular oxygen enables the oxidation of a CH group to an alcohol and finally to a ketone in the presence of manganese(II). This surprise transformation is reminiscent of the story of “The Ugly Duckling”, written by Hans Christian Andersen (1805–1875). The picture shows the intermediate homoleptic Mn III complex coordinated by two newly formed alkoxide groups, which is analyzed by C. J. McKenzie et al. in their Communication on page 545 ff. Painting: Johannes Larsen (1867–1961).
