The light‐gated ion channel channelrhodopsin‐2 (ChR 2 ) is the key protein in optogenetics. In their Communication on page 4953 ff., K. Gerwert et al. elucidate channel opening at a molecular level by a combination of time‐resolved FTIR spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations.
