Solved at last : The crystal structure of solid SF 4 , which has a melting point of −121 °C, has been obtained. It exhibits weak intermolecular S⋅⋅⋅F interactions. A similar structural motif was observed within a layer of SF 4 in [HNC 5 H 3 (CH 3 ) 2 + ] 2 F − ⋅⋅⋅SF 4 [SF 5 − ]⋅3 SF 4 . The latter structure contains a range of bonding modes between S and F, namely SF 5 − , F 4 S⋅⋅⋅F − , F 4 S⋅⋅⋅FSF 4 − , and F 4 S⋅⋅⋅FSF 3 .
