Getting indole terpenes into shape : Genetic analysis, pathway dissection, and heterologous reconstitution provide first insights into bacterial indolosesquiterpenoid biosynthesis and unveil the involvement of a new type of terpene cyclase and an indole oxygenase in the formation of indosespene, xiamycin, and sespenine ring systems. Furthermore, heterologous pathway expression led to the discovery of CC‐ and CN‐linked xiamycin dimers.
