More than three centuries after its inadvertent preparation in a coordination compound, the noninnocence of cyanide has been established unequivocally by structural and spectroscopic studies of M 3 [Co(CN) 3 ], M=Ba or Sr. The 18‐valence‐electron ion [Co(CN) 3 ] 6− contains a closed‐shell Co −I center and three CN 1.67− ligands (see scheme).
