Selenocysteine (Sec), the 21st amino acid, is a component of a variety of proteins in all lineages of life, and the greater acidity of selenols compared to thiols provides Sec with unique chemical properties. By using 77 Se NMR spectroscopy the p K a of Sec residues in a protein could be measured at atomic resolution. This information can be used to predict chemical reactions.
