Light to chemical energy : Magnesium tetraphenylporphyrin (MgTPP; 1 ), upon treatment with [Bu 4 N]OH under a CO 2 atmosphere, formed its bicarbonate adduct, [Bu 4 N][HCO 3 MgTPP] ( 2 ). Compound 2 is electrochemically oxidized at a lower potential than that of 1 ; under light illumination, it drops to an even lower value, resulting in a more facile electron release (see picture).
