Control of reactivity : A gradual adjustment of the electrophilicity of a barbiturate merocyanine is achievable using cooperative hydrogen bonds (see scheme). Substituent effects at the receptor are directly transmitted to the reactive center of the electrophilic substrate so that an almost infinitely variable adjustment of its reactivity is possible.
