And aryne makes three : The three‐component coupling of arynes, DMF, and active methylenes has provided an efficient method for the synthesis of 2 H ‐chromene and coumarin derivatives (see scheme). The sequential multistep reactions are driven by the release of strain energy in the arynes and intermediates, and this finding was supported by thermodynamics.
