Magnetically responsive photonic nanochains composed of superparamagnetic Fe 3 O 4 particles fixed within a silica shell are the smallest diffracting units that can operate in the visible spectrum. As Y. Yin et al. describe in their Communication on page 3747 ff., the synthesis involves magnetically forming chains of particles during silica coating and then wrapping them with additional silica to give mechanically robust and optically active rods.
