Taking the shortcut : Spectroscopic data (see picture) provide direct evidence that in non‐aqueous Li + electrolyte, O 2 is reduced to O 2 − , which then forms LiO 2 on the electrode surface which disproportionates to Li 2 O 2 . On charging, Li 2 O 2 decomposes directly, in a one‐step reaction to evolve O 2 and does not pass through LiO 2 as an intermediate.
