Swapping spheres : Monodisperse protein microspheres can be fabricated by templating on porous CaCO 3 microcores (see picture; CaCO 3 gray, insulin orange). The CaCO 3 cores decompose upon variation of pH from 9.0 to 5.0, whereas the insulin model protein precipitates. The method requires mild conditions, no additives, and minimal processing.
