Oxidative heterocoupling of terminal alkynes mediated by metal complexes has emerged as a promising new strategy for the incorporation of alkynyl functionality into organic molecules (see scheme). Recent key developments in the construction of C sp C   sp   3, C sp C   sp   2, C sp C sp , and C sp heteroatom bonds are highlighted.
