Rh‐odin's masterpiece : Coupling N ‐(rhodamine‐6G)lactam‐ethylenediamine to Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles through a polyethylene glycol chain renders the rhodamine unit more water soluble and useful for sensitive and selective detection of Fe III at the 2 ppb level in water. This sensitivity is also demonstrated in HeLa cells, thus indicating potential applications of this detection method in biological systems.
