Shrunken fullerene : An unexpected heptagon‐containing C 84 fullerene cage was found in C 84 Cl 32 , which was formed, in addition to C 86 (16)Cl 28 , by chlorination of C 86 (16) with VCl 4 . Comparison of the structures of C 84 Cl 32 (see picture; C gray, Cl green; red bonds highlight the heptagon) and C 86 (16)Cl 28 and theoretical calculations suggest that cage shrinkage occurs by removal of a C 2 unit from the corranulene‐like fragment of the C 86 (16) cage.
