Initial steps of bimetallic Ru–Os cluster formation on MgO in the presence of H 2 are analyzed by EXAFS and IR spectroscopy. RuOs bond formation takes place after decarbonylation of Ru 3 clusters and subsequently, at higher temperatures, of Os 3 clusters to generate coordinative unsaturation (see scheme).
