Closer than most : A series of four dichromium bis(amidinate) complexes of the type [Cr 2 {μ‐η 2 ‐ArNC(R)NAr} 2 ] display an extremely short metal–metal bond of 1.74 Å, independent of the steric hindrance of the ligands. DFT calculations of CrCr bond lengths agree well with the experimental values and computational analysis of their electronic structures indicates quintuple bonding between the two Cr centers.
