Happy together : When HCl is passed over heated MgB 2 , the magnesium subhalide MgCl is formed, which converts into the dimeric linear MgMg species Mg 2 Cl 2 upon matrix isolation. The two compounds were characterized by vibrational spectroscopy and by computations; special attention was given to the MgMg bond. The results are compared to recent findings concerning ligand‐stabilized MgMg species.
