Nuggets and buckyballs : Cationic small molecular gold clusters linked together by anions form ionic crystals. The cutting edge of such intercluster compounds involves combinations of Au 7 and Au 8 clusters and fullerides obtained by the reaction of KC 60 with [Au 8 (PPh 3 ) 8 ](NO 3 ) 2 in MeCN/THF. The picture shows a simplified view of the crystal structure of [Au 7 (PPh 3 ) 7 ]C 60 ⋅THF in the direction of [010] (C gray, Au yellow).
