A basic hydrogenation catalyst : The combination of a basic ionic liquid (IL) and a supported ruthenium complex catalyzes the hydrogenation of CO 2 with satisfactory activity and selectivity (see scheme). The resulting formic acid is easily collected and the ionic liquid and catalyst can be reused directly after an easy separation step.
