Layering up : The single‐molecule magnets (SMMs) [Mn 12 O 12 (O 2 CR) 16 (H 2 O) 4 ] have been shown to exhibit liquid‐crystalline phases. The mesophases can be smectic or cubic depending on the surface functionality imparted by the R group. A local squarelike arrangement of the cluster cores is observed within the smectic layers. This result is a first step towards the self‐assembly of SMMs on surfaces by a bottom‐up approach.
