Starting from methane : Isobutane is formed with very high selectivities when chloromethane reacts with Ga 0 suspended in a molten‐salt medium. During the reaction, hydrogen and Ga I and Ga III chlorogallate species are formed. The latter can be electrochemically reduced back to Ga 0 in a subsequent step. The chlorine liberated in this Ga 0 regeneration can be used for the synthesis of the chloromethane feedstock from methane.
