Staying put : A binuclear phenyl hydride complex of chromium resists benzene formation by reductive elimination, even though the isomeric μ‐η 6 :η 6 benzene complex can be prepared independently (see scheme, Ar=2,6‐ i Pr 2 (C 6 H 3 )). Whereas the phenyl hydride shows evidence for metal–metal bonding and antiferromagnetic coupling, the bridging benzene complex features extremely strong ferromagnetic coupling with an S =3 ground state.
