Small electronic changes matter! All three Group 10 metal hydrides MH + (M=Ni, Pd, Pt) bring about thermal CH bond activation of methane, but for each system the potential energy surfaces and thus the mechanisms of the ligand exchange MH + + CH 4 →M(CH 3 ) + + H 2 differ.
