Outstanding catalytic activity for the selective oxidation of acrolein (see picture) is observed with a crystalline metal oxide, Mo 3 VO x ( x ≤11.1). The catalyst is synthesized from a solution containing pentagonal units of {Mo(Mo 5 O 27 )} (blue), which further react with molybdenum and vanadium species (red) to form a 3D metal oxide.
