Merrily, merrily : A total synthesis of the pentacyclic sesquiterpenoid merrilactone A starting from 2,3‐dimethyl‐2‐cyclopentene‐1,4‐dione has been achieved with good stereo‐ and regioselectivity. Merrilactone A exhibits impressive neurotrophic activity and may be important for the development of therapeutic drugs for neurodegenerative disorders.
