Pieces of eight : Upon crystallization, [NBu 4 ] 2 [Pt 24 (CO) 48 ] self‐assembles into infinite one‐dimensional stacks of {Pt 3 (CO) 6 } units arranged in layers separated by [NBu 4 ] + ions. Close examination of the {Pt 3 (CO) 6 } stacks, which resemble CO‐insulated platinum cables (see picture; CO ligands omitted), shows them to be composed of alternating blocks of seven {Pt 3 (CO) 6 } units and single {Pt 3 (CO) 6 } units.
