Matrix‐isolation IR , electronic‐absorption, and Au L 3 ‐edge EXAFS (extended X‐ray absorption fine structure) data have provided the first experimental evidence that the ground‐state structure of AuCl 3 is not D 3 h symmetric (trigonal‐planar), but rather has a Jahn–Teller‐distorted T‐shaped geometry (see picture).
