Footprints of a metal : The uranyl ion (UO 2 2+ ) binds to selected proteins, at specific sites, with high affinities. This property was exploited to photocleave proteins at the UO 2 2+ ‐binding site. Quenching studies show that free UO 2 2+ is not responsible for the cleavage. This is the first report of protein photocleavage with high selectivity by the uranyl ion, upon excitation with visible light.
