Cleaning up : NaNO 2 , a simple, inexpensive and biodegradable inorganic compound, acts as a catalyst to activate molecular oxygen for the destruction of polychlorinated phenols. The NaNO 2 /O 2 system efficiently oxidizes the recalcitrant trichlorophenol into CO 2 and/or CO and a small fraction of biodegradable organic products with a high rate of conversion (see ion chromatogram).
