On cores : Silver carboxylates react with a mixture of S( t Bu)SiMe 3 and S(SiMe 3 ) 2 (in the presence of a bidentate phosphine ligand) to yield [Ag 123 S 35 (S t Bu) 50 ] ( 1 ) or [Ag 344 S 124 (S t Bu) 96 ] ( 2 , see picture: blue Ag + , red S atoms of the S t Bu groups, yellow S 2− , gray C) with maximum diameters of 2.5 ( 1 ) or 3.7 nm ( 2 ). These clusters can be described as core–shell particles with the {(Ag 2 S) 35 Ag 3 } ( 1 ) and the {(Ag 2 S) 124 } ( 2 ) cores surrounded by shells of AgS t Bu units.
