Under oxidative stress : The oxidation of guanine and 8‐oxo‐7,8‐dihydroguanine has been monitored by 18 O‐labeling methods. The combination of nucleobase radicals 1 with the carbonate radical anion 2 results in the net transfer of O − from CO 3 .− to the end products (see scheme).
