Mispairs of protonated adenine and guanine (or hypoxanthine), AH + anti G/Hx syn , can associate in various ways to give mixed purine quartets (see picture) as demonstrated by X‐ray crystallography and ab initio calculations. The planar structure of such quartets implies that akin to established purine nucleobase quartets, these quartets could also play a role in natural DNA structures.
