Cluster Disorder and Ordering Principles in Al‐Stabilized “LaI”

What appears to be “LaI” with a NaCl‐type structure is in fact an Al‐stabilized cluster compound consisting of disordered La 6 AlI 12 clusters that share I atoms (see picture). Quantitative analysis of diffuse diffraction data revealed both the constitution of this compound and the fact that this disorder is not statistical, but as uniform as possible for the composition La ≈0.7 I 1− x Al x ( x ≈0.14) given the observed lattice.
