Into the blue : Hg 2+ ‐ion‐triggered formation of a brightly fluorescent squaraine dye is used as a novel approach for the design of highly selective and sensitive chromofluorogenic probes for the analysis of Hg 2+ ions down to concentrations below 2 ppb (see picture). Through the adsorption of the sensor on a solid support a prototype reusable test strip is also generated.
