Cores and effect : Heating the cluster [W 18 O 56 (SO 3 ) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ] 8− causes an electron transfer from the core sulfite anions to the cluster shell resulting in a color change from colorless to dark blue (see backgrounds). The electron transfer is coupled with a structural reorganization of the cluster shell and oxidation of the sulfite to sulfate anions (see scheme).
